Rental yard sign guide

What to Put on a For Rent Sign

A useful For Rent sign should tell people what is available, give them one clear contact path, and make it easy to see the full rental details online.

This guide explains what belongs on the physical sign, what belongs on the listing page, when a QR code helps, and how to keep the message readable from the street.

What should a For Rent sign include?

A clear rental yard sign normally includes five things:

  1. A prominent For Rent headline.
  2. One primary contact method, usually a phone number or email.
  3. A short decision-making detail, such as rent, availability, or bedroom count.
  4. An optional QR code leading to a public rental listing with photos and next steps.
  5. A short scan instruction, such as “Scan for photos and details.”

The sign should be readable first and detailed second. Put the full description, pet policy, deposit, lease terms, application requirements, and photo gallery on the online listing.

The information hierarchy that works best

A renter may see the sign while walking, driving through the neighborhood, or visiting a nearby property. The message needs to make sense in a few seconds.

1. Start with the purpose

“For Rent” should be the largest and most recognizable wording. “House For Rent,” “Apartment For Rent,” and “Now Leasing” can also work when they describe the property more accurately.

2. Make the next action obvious

Choose the contact method you will actually monitor. A phone number works well for calls or texts. Email can be useful when you want written inquiries. A QR code can provide details, but it should not be the only way someone can understand the sign.

3. Add one or two useful qualifiers

Use the limited sign space for details that help a renter decide whether to continue:

  • Monthly rent
  • Available now or an availability date
  • Bedroom and bathroom count
  • A short feature such as “Garage” or “Pet policy online”
  • A short instruction such as “Scan for photos”

Do not shrink the important text just to fit more features. A readable phone number and headline are more useful than a long amenity list.

Pinlisting product note: The current Pinlisting For Rent Yard Sign is 24 inches by 18 inches, printed double-sided on 4 mm corrugated plastic, and includes a standard 24-inch metal H-frame stake. The layout can be ordered without a QR code or with an optional QR code.

Should a rental sign have a QR code?

A QR code is useful when the renter can safely approach or stop near the sign and the destination provides meaningful information. It is most helpful for photos, detailed rent and deposit information, availability, application steps, and the preferred contact process.

A QR code is less useful when it is too small, blocked by landscaping, placed far from the sidewalk, or linked to a private, expired, or login-only page.

Where should the QR code link?

Use the public page that already gives renters the clearest next step. That may be:

  • Your Zillow or Apartments.com rental listing
  • Your property-management website or availability page
  • A public Facebook Marketplace listing
  • A public application or tour-scheduling page
  • A Pinlisting-hosted rental page if you do not already have a suitable listing page

If your existing listing already has accurate details, photos, and a working inquiry method, link to it. A new Pinlisting page is a fallback, not a requirement.

What should the destination page contain?

  • The property address or a clear property identifier
  • Current rent, deposit, and availability
  • Bedrooms, bathrooms, and important property facts
  • Accurate photos
  • Pet, parking, utility, and lease information when relevant
  • A clear contact, tour, or application action

What should stay off the sign?

Avoid:

  • Long property descriptions
  • Multiple phone numbers or competing calls to action
  • Full screening or application requirements
  • Tiny amenity lists
  • A QR code without a short explanation
  • Language describing the type of renter you want

Describe the property, price, availability, and process—not the preferred renter. Review Pinlisting’s Fair Housing information, check local requirements, and seek qualified advice for legal questions.

Placement and scanning checklist

  • Check municipal, HOA, condo, and property rules before placing the sign.
  • Use a location visible from the usual direction of travel.
  • Keep the sign clear of shrubs, snow, parked vehicles, and trash containers.
  • Place it where a renter can safely stop or approach.
  • Keep the sign upright and secure.
  • Scan the QR code from the expected distance before leaving.
  • Open the destination in a logged-out browser to confirm it is public.
  • Recheck the link whenever the listing is updated or moved.

What size should a rental yard sign be?

A 24-inch by 18-inch sign is a common practical size for a residential rental because it gives the headline, contact details, short property information, and an optional QR code enough space to remain readable. The right size still depends on viewing distance, local rules, and how close people can get to the sign.

If you already own a readable sign, you may not need to replace it. A separate QR code sticker for an existing sign can add an online destination without changing the full sign.

For Rent sign questions

Should I put the monthly rent on the sign?

Include it when the amount is stable and you want renters to self-qualify. If it may change, use a message such as “Scan for current rent and availability.”

Can the QR code link to Zillow or Apartments.com?

Yes, provided the listing is public, current, and opens without requiring the renter to sign in.

Do I need a Pinlisting page?

No. Use your existing public listing when it already gives renters accurate details and a clear next step. A Pinlisting page is available when you need a simple destination.

Can I add a QR code to a sign I already own?

Yes. Use a properly sized sticker on a clean, dry, smooth sign surface and test the finished placement with a phone.

Should the QR code replace the phone number?

Usually not. The QR code is best treated as an additional path to photos and details, while the sign keeps a clear contact or next-step message.

Can I change the QR destination after printing?

A Pinlisting page can be updated after printing. A code printed for a direct external URL cannot be changed; if that outside listing URL changes, the sign or sticker must be replaced.
